My students’ job.......

As students come to my classroom for art, there are several things I want from them.  I want all students to believe in themselves as artists.  I also want students to understand that our progression as an artist is directly related to the effort we put into developing the skills necessary to communicate and apply our thoughts and ideas visually.  In other words, you have to practice in order to get better!  Lastly, I want students to enjoy and celebrate their creativeness.  Each project a student creates involves so many skills that will be applicable throughout their lives.  This involves brainstorming, sequencing, problem-solving, not to mention the development of fine motor skills.  This list could go on and on!!

My job as the teacher......

My vision for my art students is to ensure all students can meet and exceed their personal goals. My students rely on my leadership to facilitate a classroom that is organized and comfortable for all. Without the comfort of an organized and safe classroom with high expectations students would not be in the right state of mind to learn the necessary skills to create art. I believe it is also vital that the students see the teacher model a skill level they can strive toward. In essence, I must also be an artist and a student. I want students to see art as a tool of visual communication that, at times, can be more effective than words. I want to instill in my students an interest in art that will become lifelong.
