Plant-It Activity Guide

Step 1. Introduce the problem presented in the "Plant-It" Activity. Have students brainstorm possible methods to increase the height of the Plants. Students might want to refer to the various databases available on the Internet for ideas.

Step 2. Before issuing the seeds and materials to the students, have them design a Lab Pre-write. Note: Students can plant anytime but may only grow for 30 days maximum.

Step 3. Students are to maintain their plants on a regular basis. The following data is to be reported every Friday for a period of 30 days: maximum height of plant (fold leaves upward to get maximum height) (cm).

Step 4. Using the "Plant Data Report Form", the above data needs to be reported to the Internet network every Friday or Monday. Note: It is asked that ONLY ONE plant report per school per class be reported each week. This plant data will be determined by the tallest plant in the class each week. If the activity is performed in more than one class, your school will upload an additional "Plant Data Report Form" each week for each additional class. Make sure the team name is included with the additional reports.

Step 5. Upon receipt of the weekly plant data from all participating schools, students are asked to construct a graph to represent the maximum height of the plants from each school. This graph should be updated on a weekly basis.

Step 6. A final report listing the Top Five Producers will be placed on the Internet Network upon completion by the coordinator.
